THANKFULNESS by Suzanne Weldy

I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart. I will recount all your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and sing praises. Psalm 9:1-2

Thank you, Jehovah Rapha! You are the God who heals. You have made my bitter waters sweet and I am grateful. I could explode with Thanksgiving!

In October 2016, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. A 2 cm lump in my left breast, Her2 positive and microscopic metastasis in one lymph node. At 45 years old, my life was changed forever. It was just after Hurricane Matthew and school was closed that week. We hit the ground running . . . appointments, tests, MRI, lymph node dissection, echo, education meeting, port installation . . . insomnia . . . anxiety . . . surrender.

I began this journey with six hard hitting chemotherapy sessions. During this time, I lost my appetite, lost 15 pounds, lost my hair, lost clarity of thought, lost my independence. I suffered the typical side effects of chemo, but they were minimal. My heart withstood treatment and my white counts stayed within normal range the entire time. This is the power of prayer!

In April 2017, I had a Bilateral Mastectomy having both of my breasts removed. The pathology results revealed CPR, Complete Pathologic Response!  Praise God, the chemo worked! I chose not to have reconstruction. I decided to, “Go Flat.” I did miraculously well. Surgery was followed by 28 sessions of radiation to my left chest wall and armpit. I used Deep Inspiration Breath Hold during these sessions in order to protect my heart. I suffered burns that became wet and were eventually replaced with brand new skin.

In October 2017, I participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk one year from diagnosis! As I crossed the finish line, I walked the pink carpet (Survivors Lane) and gave thanks to God that I’m still here!

I recently completed my last targeted treatment, my last IV infusion. I received this treatment every three weeks for one year and now I am done!

It has been a tough year, but through it God has been my strength, my comfort, my peace, my healer.  Through it I have begun to comprehend the length, width, height and depth of His love. This month of November I have focused on Thanksgiving, giving thanks daily for all the ways I have been blessed over the past year.

God spoke to me through His word, John 11:4 removing my anxiety completely. God provided my needs abundantly. God answered thousands of prayers lifted on my behalf. God’s healing power touched me. God used the hard things for good. God gave me beauty for ashes. To Him be all the Glory for what He has done in my life! One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. Luke 17:15-16

With Thanksgiving,
