Helpful tips on finding rest

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

You just did one of two things when you read this verse.

  1. You laughed out loud

  2. You took a deep breath

The reason why I know this…I have done both when I came across this verse. I was your typical crazy first time mom that had to have the house clean, kids clean and dressed, have a schedule and dinner on the table, and oh yes, work part time. Yes this was me. No time for rest. Just go, go, go. RIDICULOUS is what it was. Talk about high expectations for myself and everyone around me. The way I acted was unreal. Also please don't throw my schedule off because then that's when stuff gets C R A Z Y!

With the gentle (and sometimes not so gentle) prompting from my husband that I didn't need to have it altogether and perfect.

You may just want to know what rest feels like because your life is chaotic on the outside and quite frankly the inside too. I get it and I have a few suggestions.

  1. Rest can look like taking a bath with a good book for 20 mins before bed when the house is finally quiet

  2. Setting your alarm for 15 mins to steal quiet time why one of the littles is sleeping and one or two has quiet/reading time

  3. Take a walk around the block after dinner/dishes are done.

  4. Listen to an encouraging podcast (with earbuds) while folding laundry and your kiddos watch a show

These are just a few things that may help you as they helped me. Now that my children are older I do take at least 1 hour for myself everyday. It may look like a walk with a friend, riding my stationary bike, reading and spending time with God. Just always remember that just like seasons life changes. It doesn't stay the same and neither should you. If there are things you want to change, just make one change at the start of the month or heck today and stick with it for a month. See how you feel and I guarantee something new and beautiful may come of it and it most likely will be YOU!

Remember too that God is for you. You can find rest in His word and giving Him the heavy stuff that you can’t shoulder anymore. It’s ok! He can handle it. He will see you through. He is for you friend. I promise you that!
